Local company to host a fundraising event for ash dieback response

A local company is fundraising for the Trust's Ash Dieback Fund this Bank Holiday.

Francis of Malvern is hosting a charity fun day event on Monday 26th August with proceeds going to support the management of local woodlands.  The event will be held from 10am to 2pm and activities include children's colouring competition, face-painting, a treasure hunt and a raffle.

Ash dieback disease, which was first identified in the UK in 2012, has spread across the country and causes the wilting of leaves, shoots to die back and often the death of the tree. Evidence suggests that the fungal infection will result in between 60-80% of the UK’s ash being lost and it is estimated that 20% of trees under the Trust’s care are ash.

Trees severely affected by the disease need tree surgery and possibly felling for reasons of public safety. This loss of ash trees will have a dramatic impact on the landscape of the Malvern Hills and Commons.

"We're extremely grateful to Francis of Malvern for their support in helping us to respond to the devastating impacts of ash dieback disease.  As a charity with 1,200 hectares of land under our care, we are facing huge financial pressures as the disease takes hold and more practical management is needed in response.  Many of the ash trees are on steep slopes near to roadsides requiring specialist and experienced contractors to safely remove them. This is expensive work."

Funds raised will contribute towards managing trees infected with the disease near to properties and highways, replanting new trees where ash have been lost and ongoing woodland management in affected areas to support woodland wildlife.

We thank all those who have donated so far to the ash dieback fund to support our charity.  If you are unable to attend the event this weekend, you can also make a donation via Just Giving.
