As winter approaches the search is on for volunteers to help conserve the rare grayling butterfly.
The West Midlands branch of the national charity Butterfly Conservation are looking for volunteers to help clear vegetation on the Malvern Hills. A series of work parties have been organised for those wishing to lend a helping hand.
The Malvern Hills are home to the only colony of grayling butterfly in Worcestershire. The Malvern Hills Trust's close partnership working with Butterfly Conservation West Midlands, Malvern Butterfly Group and with volunteers has resulted in a large area of bare rock being exposed, the perfect habitat for the grayling.
Conservation efforts over the last couple of years have led to an increase in the numbers of grayling butterflies recorded on the Hills. As winter approaches, it is time once again for vegetation to be cleared to prepare breeding sites for next year.
Volunteer work parties are being held on the following dates:
22nd October 2018
12th November 2018
14th January 2019
11th February 2019
All the work parties begin at 10am from North Quarry car park (North Malvern Road, WR14 4LT). Biscuits and tea will be offered at the first break!
